Teachers Learning Together - Education Workshop was fantastic!

This past Friday, November 21st, and Saturday, November 22nd, Discovery School hosted its 8th annual Teacher Workshop at the Marriot Hotel. For the past eight consecutive years, Cristiana Banegas (Elementary and Curriculum Coordinator) has headed the Discovery School team by organizing this workshop designed for bilingual teachers. Due to the limited staff development opportunities in Honduras, the workshop has evolved into a much anticipated and successful annual event. Around 400 teachers from all over the country joined in a two-day intensive setting, where more than 50 teachers from different schools came forth to sharing their successes and expertise in the classroom. The main focus in this event lies in staying true to one of Discovery School’s fundamental beliefs: hands-on learning. No lectures, no master discourses or dissertations- it’s all about teachers coming together to learn by doing what they themselves will be implementing in the classrooms.
Each annual event has had a specific theme, topic or distinct signature: Behavior Management, Assessment, Differentiation and ADHD to mention a few. The 2008 Workshop offered selected teachers and administrators from Discovery School and two other bilingual schools the chance to receive training from the University of Northern Florida. This training is geared towards teachers that will be supervising UNF interns as they come and do their teaching practicum here in Honduras. This opens a new door to endless possibilities for Discovery School, as well as broadens our horizons in both national and international settings.

Jovenes en Accion sponsoring Empty Bowls project at Songfest

This year during songfest the Jovenes en Accion youth group is conducting a joint fundraiser with Discovery School, to support the "Empty Bowls" worldwide initiative to fight hunger. Our Discovery School Art Teacher will organize the students to make bowls during school or even at home. Parents are encouraged to participate by making bowls. The "Empty Bowls," which symbolize hunger around the world, will be sold during the songfest celebration. 100% of the money raised will be donated by the Jovenes en Accion to three daycare centers that serve the working poor in Nueva Suyapa. The money buys two meals and a snack for each child every day. The menu was developed by a volunteer nutritionist. Most of the kids are from single mother households whose mothers work as maids or street cleaners. Some of the poorer children have mothers that don't work, but send the kids to daycare for the free food. Those that can pay, pay a symbolic daily rate of around Lps.5. and those that can't pay are sponsored by the school. The money has really made a difference because buying food was a constant struggle for the project. Through Jovenes en Accion, funds can be set aside to be used to feed the children.

We also collected dozens of pairs of used running shoes to donate to them. After expenses for food and supplies were paid we will pass the remaining profit of L. 29,045 to the Discovery School Athletic Department to purchase sports equipment for Discovery School.
It was a great day!

Discovery is going green!
The Discovery School is promoting environmentally friendly practices on our campus, and we need your help and participation! DPTO would like to organize a "Green Committee" comprised of parents, teachers and students, to support ongoing student recycling and composting projects, and introduce new ideas, launch new activities, and make our school a model of a "green school". If you are interested in this initiative, contact discoverypto@gmail.com. And look for more information here about our first meeting!
Meanwhile, Ms Hurley and the 12th graders are moving ahead with their composting project. The 12th grade environmental science class has designed a composting structure and has proposed this to the board. The proposed structure, if approved, will be built in the lower soccer field area. It is estimated that composting the school's organic waste could reduce its waste by 1/3 and save the school up to 15,000 lempiras each year, from the reduced cost of waste removal and the elimination of the need to purchase fertilizer and dirt, as those are created composting. The students are asking for funding from the board (approximately 3000 lempiras) and help from the maintenance staff to build the structure. They are also looking for donations from parents or community members to help cover the cost of the structure or for volunteers to help in the construct the structure. The students are looking to complete the construction by the end of December, so that the composting may begin at the beginning of third quarter. During third quarter, the environmental science students will give classroom chats to elementary and secondary students about the process of composting and how the project will be accomplished at our school.
Please contact Miss Hurley (churley@discoveryschool.edu.hn) for more information.
