Jovenes en Accion sponsoring Empty Bowls project at Songfest
This year during songfest the Jovenes en Accion youth group is conducting a joint fundraiser with Discovery School, to support the "Empty Bowls" worldwide initiative to fight hunger. Our Discovery School Art Teacher will organize the students to make bowls during school or even at home. Parents are encouraged to participate by making bowls. The "Empty Bowls," which symbolize hunger around the world, will be sold during the songfest celebration. 100% of the money raised will be donated by the Jovenes en Accion to three daycare centers that serve the working poor in Nueva Suyapa. The money buys two meals and a snack for each child every day. The menu was developed by a volunteer nutritionist. Most of the kids are from single mother households whose mothers work as maids or street cleaners. Some of the poorer children have mothers that don't work, but send the kids to daycare for the free food. Those that can pay, pay a symbolic daily rate of around Lps.5. and those that can't pay are sponsored by the school. The money has really made a difference because buying food was a constant struggle for the project. Through Jovenes en Accion, funds can be set aside to be used to feed the children.
