El pasado viernes 21 y sábado 22 de noviembre Discovery School llevó acabo su 8avo Taller anual en el Hotel Marrito de Tegucigalpa. Por los últimos 8 años consecutivos, Cristiana Banegas (Coordinadora de Primaria y de Curriculum) ha sido la líder del equipo de Discovery, y quien organiza este evento para maestros bilingües. Debido a la falta de oportunidades para desarrollo profesional que existen en Honduras, este taller se ha convertido en un evento esperado por muchas escuelas a nivel nacional. Alrededor de 400 maestros de todo el país se reunieron por 2 días en este hotel. Mas de 50 maestros compartieron sus experiencias y éxitos en sus clases con sus colegas. El objetivo principal de este evento es el de apegarse a la filosofía de enseñanza en Discovery: el aprender a hacer algo haciendolo. No hay conferencias magistrales o disertaciones, al contrario: es promover que los maestros aprendan juntos practicando lo que ellos mismos podrán implementar en sus aulas de clase al finalizar el evento. .
El taller tienen un tema especifica para cada año- Manejo de Conducta, Evaluación, Diferenciación, o Síndrome de Atención e Hiperactividad entere otros. El Taller del 2008 ofreció a un grupo de maestros y administradores de Discovery School y otras dos escuelas bilingües la oportunidad de tomar un entrenamiento ofrecido por la Universidad de Northern Florida. Este entrenamiento esta destinado a maestros que estarán supervisando a estudiantes de esta prestigiosa Universidad al hacer su practica educativa en Honduras. Esto abre nuevos horizontes para nuestra escuela ya que amplia nuestros horizontes tanto nacional como internacionalmente

This past Friday, November 21st, and Saturday, November 22nd, Discovery School hosted its 8th annual Teacher Workshop at the Marriot Hotel. For the past eight consecutive years, Cristiana Banegas (Elementary and Curriculum Coordinator) has headed the Discovery School team by organizing this workshop designed for bilingual teachers. Due to the limited staff development opportunities in Honduras, the workshop has evolved into a much anticipated and successful annual event. Around 400 teachers from all over the country joined in a two-day intensive setting, where more than 50 teachers from different schools came forth to sharing their successes and expertise in the classroom. The main focus in this event lies in staying true to one of Discovery School’s fundamental beliefs: hands-on learning. No lectures, no master discourses or dissertations- it’s all about teachers coming together to learn by doing what they themselves will be implementing in the classrooms.
Each annual event has had a specific theme, topic or distinct signature: Behavior Management, Assessment, Differentiation and ADHD to mention a few. The 2008 Workshop offered selected teachers and administrators from Discovery School and two other bilingual schools the chance to receive training from the University of Northern Florida. This training is geared towards teachers that will be supervising UNF interns as they come and do their teaching practicum here in Honduras. This opens a new door to endless possibilities for Discovery School, as well as broadens our horizons in both national and international settings.
